Disc granulation principle
The disc granulator operates through an inclined disc that rotates continuously on its axis. Powdered material is fed onto the disc surface along with a controlled amount of binding liquid, which can be water, lignosulfonate solution, diluted molasses, or another binding agent compatible with the product formulation. As the disc rotates, moist particles adhere to each other forming small nuclei that grow progressively by incorporating more dry material with each revolution of the pan.
The combination of disc rotation, adjustable inclination, and gravitational force produces a natural classification effect where larger granules migrate toward the disc edge and fall by overflow, while smaller granules and ungranulated material remain in the central zone to continue growing. This self-classification mechanism produces remarkably uniform size granules without requiring additional screening equipment during the formation process.

Granule size control

Disc inclination angle is the primary factor: lower angles produce larger granules by increasing residence time, while steeper angles produce smaller granules by accelerating discharge. Disc rotation speed, dry material feed rate, and binding liquid dosage are additional variables that directly influence final product size and quality.
Typical granule size range falls between two and six millimeters in diameter, although granules up to eight millimeters can be achieved with specific process adjustments.
